Environmental Policies

Environmental Policies

Environmental Policies at Cavendish & Cole, we believe that exceptional craftsmanship should go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. As specialists in timber sash windows, doors, and heritage joinery, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact at every stage of the process—from sourcing materials to workshop practices and on-site installation.

Crafting timber windows and doors with care—for your home and the planet

We take a thoughtful, long-term approach to sustainability, ensuring that our work not only protects your property’s future—but contributes positively to the environment we all share.

Sustainably Sourced Timber

All of our joinery is produced using responsibly sourced timber from well-managed forests.

Wherever possible, we use:

  • FSC®-certified and PEFC-certified hardwoods and softwoods
  • Accoya® timber, which is sustainably grown, non-toxic, and carbon-negative over its life cycle
  • Engineered timber and laminated sections that reduce waste and improve stability
  • European oak, redwood, and tulipwood from regulated suppliers

We are firmly against the use of illegally logged or endangered timber species.

Workshop Waste Reduction & Recycling

In our Sussex joinery workshop, we actively reduce material waste and energy use through:

  • Efficient cutting practices to minimise offcuts
  • Recycling of timber offcuts for secondary use or biomass heating
  • Responsible disposal of paints, solvents, and glazing waste
  • Low-energy LED lighting and improved workshop insulation
  • Regular equipment servicing to reduce emissions and prolong machinery life

We continue to improve internal practices to move towards a lower-carbon, lower-waste operation year on year.

Eco-Friendly Paints & Finishes

Our workshop painted finishes use microporous, water-based paints and stains that are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

These finishes:

  • Allow timber to breathe naturally, reducing moisture-related decay
  • Have a longer lifespan than many solvent-based systems, reducing the need for frequent repainting
  • Contribute to healthier indoor environments during and after installation

We also offer natural oil finishes for customers seeking a chemical-free alternative, particularly when working with Accoya or oak joinery.

Longevity = Sustainability

We believe the most environmentally responsible windows and doors are those that last.

By investing in durable, repairable materials—and avoiding the disposable approach of uPVC—we extend the lifespan of your windows and reduce future material demand. Our sash windows and doors are designed to be repaired, upgraded, and maintained over decades, not just replaced.

This ethos supports both your property’s architectural integrity and the planet’s long-term health.

Transport & Local Sourcing

We limit our environmental footprint further by:

  • Sourcing materials as locally as possible
  • Working exclusively across Sussex, Kent, and Surrey to reduce travel emissions
  • Coordinating deliveries and installations efficiently to reduce mileage
  • Supporting local suppliers and trades whenever possible
